Le Festival international du livre mangeable se déroule annuellement autour du 1er avril. À ce jour, il s’est tenu dans les pays suivants : Australie, Allemagne, Angleterre, Brésil, Canada, États-Unis d’Amérique, France, Inde, Irlande, Italie, Japon, Luxembourg, Maroc, Mexique, Nouvelle-Zélande, Pays-Bas, Russie. Hong Kong vient d'annoncer sa participation en 2007.

La date du 1er avril souligne le jour anniversaire du célèbre gastronome français Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), connu pour son traité érudit et plein d’humour, Physiologie du goût, et bien sûr pour le fameux fromage qui porte son nom. Ce jour, qui est aussi celui du Poisson d’avril, est sans aucun doute l’occasion par excellence pour mettre à la bouche les pâtes à feuilleter, les mots croustillants et les vers chocolatés, car les «livres» sont dégustés le jour même de l’événement. Si ce festival unique en son genre est d'abord un partage de nourriture et de culture, il est aussi une occasion de réflexion sur les saveurs et les savoirs. Il peut aussi prendre la forme d’un manifeste contre la faim dans le monde et l’illettrisme.

Cette idée originale de confectionner des livres comestibles est de Judith A. Hoffberg . Elle lui est venue en 1999, lors d’un dîner de Thanksgiving réunissant des créateurs de livres d’artiste. Dès 2000, le site Internet créé par l’artiste multi-disciplinaire Béatrice Coron a concrétisé et immortalisé ces banquets livresques annuels. L’actuel gestionnaire du site Internet du festival est Adage (www.diffusionadage.com).

Le Festival international du livre mangeable est membre de la Fédération des festivals internationaux de poésie.

Tous sont conviés, individuellement et collectivement, à ce banquet collectif mondial où sont dévorées de délicieuses et surprenantes nourritures livresques.

Les règles de participation sont les suivantes :

1 l’événement doit se dérouler le 1er avril (ou à une date proche)

2 chaque livre mangeable doit avoir un caractère «livresque» que ce soit par l’intégration de textes, l’inspiration littéraire ou tout simplement la forme

3 l’organisation ou le participant individuel doit s’enregistrer auprès de l’organisation du festival (enregistrement) et voir à immortaliser l’événement sur le site web international du festival (www.livremangeable.com).

The International Edible Book Festival is held annually around April 1st. To date, the following countries have held this festival: Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France,  Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, United States of America, Russia. Hong Kong has just announced its participation in 2007.

April 1st is the birthday of French gastronome Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), famous for his book Physiologie du goût, a witty meditation on food. April fools' day is also the perfect day to eat your words and play with them as the "books" are consumed on the day of the event. This ephemeral global banquet, in which anyone can participate, is shared by all on the internet and allows everyone to preserve and discover unique bookish nourishments. This festival is a celebration of the ingestion of culture and a way to concretely share a book; it is also a deeper reflexion on our attachment to food and our cultural differences.

The International Edible Book Festival is a creation of Judith A. Hoffberg and Béatrice Coron. Judith got the idea over a Thanksgiving turkey with book artists in 1999, and Béatrice created Books2Eat website where despite the distances everyvody can enjoy worldwide's creations. They contacted friends and colleagues; their first event happened in 2000. Since then the festival continues as an annual sensation. Everyone is invited, individually and collectively, to this world banquet where delicious, surprising bookish foods will be consumed.

Participation rules are as follows:

1 the event must be held on April 1st (or close to that date)

2 All edible books must be "bookish" through the integration of text, literary inspiration or, quite simply, the form.

3 Organizations or individual participants must register with the festival’s organization (go to Registration) and see to it that the event is immortalized on the international festival website (www.books2eat.com).
